Heidi comes to Gunmamachi, Gunmaken from Vancouver, British Columbia. She
holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in German from the University of British
Columbia. She received her TESOL certification from the Canadian Global
TESOL Training Institute in Calgary, Alberta.
She has six years of German-English translation experience. In 2001, she
received credit for her research and translation work on the documentary
film, Leo’s Journey: The Story of the Mengele Twins (Infinity Films Entertainment
Group, Inc. Vancouver, British Columbia).
She currently teaches English as a Foreign Language to children, adolescents,
and adults at Gunma Language Center and Language Academy

Hello! My name is Cameron Burris, and I teach English at GLC. Though I
grew up in Kansas City, I attended the University of Colorado in Boulder,
Colorado. I
graduated in May of 2021 with my Bachelors of Arts in Classics. In short,
I studied the history of Ancient Greece and Rome, as well as Latin and
Attic Greek. I found studying grammar particularly enjoyable, and it felt
rewarding to be able to read some authentic texts. Overall, I would say
that my college experience opened a window into the world beyond my home.
After graduating, I moved back to Kansas City. During the 2022-2023 school
year, I worked as an assistant teacher at a local elementary school. There,
I worked with children ages 5-10 in individual and small group settings.
During the evenings and weekends, I tutored high school students for all
subjects of the ACT including the English and Reading sections. The ACT
is one of the main entrance exams that students take for American universities.
Over the course of that year, I enjoyed teaching a variety of different
students. As a result, I enrolled in the CELTA program at Missouri State
University in August of 2023. The CELTA is a certificate for teaching English
as a foreign language to adult learners. While completing this program,
I got the chance to meet many students from all over the world including
Panama, Mongolia, Ukraine, Japan, Vietnam, and Mexico. They all had their
own interesting stories and perspectives, and I felt fortunate to be able
to support them in their English language journey. I am proud to say that
I finished the program with a Pass A, which is a distinction that only
about 5% of CELTA candidates receive globally. Since then, I have moved
to Takasaki to start teaching English to adults and children as my full
time job. In my free time, you will often find me exploring different places
in Gunma Prefecture. I especially enjoy going to onsen towns up in the
mountains, as well as going on hikes to enjoy nature. My favorite movie
is Pan’s Labyrinth , and my favorite type of music is old Spanish ballads.

Hello! My name is Sean Hall, and I recently finished my master’s program
in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) & Linguistics
at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, USA. Many things brought me
to this point, but the main ones are my love for languages and helping
others see how language learning can impact their lives.
I first became passionate about language acquisition during my time as
a student of Central Eurasian Studies. I was a student of Persian, and
in summer 2017 I studied abroad in Tajikistan through the prestigious Critical
Language Scholarship Program. During this trip, I was impacted by my interaction
with Tajik language and culture, and I had my sheltered worldview as an
American broken. At this point, I decided that I wanted to revolve my life
around languages, so I began searching for careers that would let me use
my knowledge in this field. When I returned to the USA, I took a course
in Russian. Through a friend, I was connected with a language school in
Ufa, Russia, and after I graduated with my BA, I went there and taught
English for one academic year.
This experience showed me how life-changing teaching can be. I loved being
able to help others solve their problems they had learning English, and
I saw the impact that my knowledge of my students’ culture had in the classroom.
They were more open to learning with me because I demonstrated genuine
interest in their culture and language(s). I saw the importance of intercultural
exchange in the English classroom, and I wanted to become a teacher who
could do this exchange effectively.
